Last time I saw a solar eclipse was in college, circa '87 or '88. A friend and I actually cut classes and drove to a field in Quezon City with pieces of dark tinted welder's glasses to enable us to look directly at the sun. Very interesting.

REMINDER: This thread is about the upcoming solar eclipse (partial in Cebu). This is NOT a tsunami thread. Consider this a warning. Refrain from discussing about tsunamis in this thread, or you'll regret it.

To those who haven't witnessed a solar eclipse before, please be advised that there are safety guidelines for this--you can damage your vision if you don't follow them.

You can get safety instructions here:
(printable PDF, good for science teachers)
http://www.eso.org/public/events/ast...fi-glasses.pdf

or here:

NASA - Eye Safety During Solar Eclipses

The simplest (indirect, thus safest) method is the pinhole method.

1. Take a piece of cardboard.

2. Get a sharp object (i.e. icepick) and make a tiny hole through the cardboard (about 1-3 mm in dia.).

3. Let the sun shine through the hole (ayaw pag-li-li sa buslot!), and let the sun's rays fall through the hole, onto another sheet of paper, directly behind it. You will see a dot, and that dot is the sun, and will appear crescent-shaped at the height of the solar eclipse here in Cebu.

Another good indirect method is the pinhole-box method...

it's similar to above, but the fact that nakatago ang other paper inside the darkness of the box, the image of the sun is easier to see due to the enhanced contrast.

I will personally use a binoculars-box method to project the eclipse from a pair of binoculars (single objective only) onto a white board inside a box. Will show pictures during the event.

ADDENDUM:

Interestingly enough, if you stand under a medium-shade tree at 9:40-ish anywhere in Cebu on July 22 (provided dili cloudy), and look at the ground...this is what you expect to see...

...the usually round dots in leaf shadows, become crescents.

The user nge has been banned for 3 days for not complying with the thread's requirements. Again, I will not tolerate people who do not take moderators' warnings seriously.

I shall be temporarily locking this thread. All the info you guys need for July 22nd are all here anyways (take time to actually READ the posts). I shall unlock this thread once people behave and respect this subforum.

Let's hope for good weather tomorrow morning. Will be prepping my camera for the event, and share my shots in this thread.

For safety instructions, scroll 5 posts up.

And I'm not going to look at it directly...my camera will.
