Question What matters the most when hiring a programmer?

If you are the owner of a certain company and you are in need of programmers, what are the qualifications you require? Do you believe that all or most good programmers are college graduates or graduates of computer related courses?

No, I totally disagree the sentence regarding collage graduate.
I am in the programming business since 1980, and all good programmer I know are not graduate in any computer related subject. They are all "computer freaks", using the computer as a hobby, self-studying by doing.

If I would hire a programmer, I would not care a little what collage graduation he/she has. I would look at his/her experience, how he/she react to certain programming related questions.

Anyway, thats my opinion.

Communication skills is important. In this way you'll be able to deliver/share your thoughts and idea to your client in a way that there's no misunderstanding. If dont have this, you can be only a plain programmer - a coder that do what the designer want him to do, you cant be a sofware engineer.

its not that important but.. if i have to choose

between a person with a diploma vs a person without a diploma, given that they have the same experience/expertise... ill choose the one with the diploma.

What if the one without diploma belongs to your fifth criteria?
