    1. Familiarize yourself about POS
    2. Study OOP and Java
3 Study about GUI Ergonomics and Java Swing.
    4. Study the network programming in java (Serial Programming or USB)
    5. Study some input peripherals like scanner.
    6. Study some third party JAVA API

    Mao man cguro ni.

dli sad cguro bai, as long as people are running MSWindows dli maobsolete ang VB or VC, mas hastle hinoon mag install ug .NET Framework sa client PC just to run your POS client, so imagine you have 10 client POS running windows 95, does it mean mag install ka ug .NET framework sa 10 ka PC? (same thing to Java Virtual Machines).

POS machines doesnt need to run on latest OS. POS machines should be as minimal as posible. POS in malls are runnin on DOS[or emulated] consoles some are even running on stripped down Linux boxes or as old as Win95. kabantay mo gagmay kaayu ilang PC? hehehe

VB is the right choice for POS kng kelangan ka ug paspas na development and deployment. pero kng nindut ang specs sa imong mga POS clients go for JAVA or .NET, they have a powerfull DB API's available online. Pero kng ganagan ka ug sophistication sa imong POS like customize DB API, fast UI, total control of drivers (for touch screen, scanners, networks,MSR cards--for swiping card) go for VC. Most of the POS in japan are shifting to Linux boxes developed on C.
C or Delphi is used for minimal systems such as those found on pharmacies operated on DOS mode.

Some supermarkets are also using WEB/HTML for their POS, these is more practical bcoz you just need to Deploy your POS application to a single machine(or a server) then clients using any browser will just access the server. But controls that is easy to implement on desktop programming are hard for web like tree view, list, and any input controls (pero these things are available on the net naman!).

So before developing any POS system dapat kabalo ka sa scope sa imng so called "client" or user (not only pertaining to "person user" also to "machines" and architecture.

    guide questions lang ni bro:
    1) How big is the POS?
    2) Is there any central server? How many expected clients?
    3) what type of machine are to be used?(OS, PC specs,RAM)
    4) what extra features do it have? (touch screens, MSR,scanners)

    @jerx d great

try reading a very detailed answer to your confusion for the reply of cebugdev. a good system architect must consider a lot of things before deciding a tool. i am also a vb.net developer using ORACLE as my DB with but when it comes to short schedule dead lines and machine specs I prefer using VB6. As long as MSWindows is alive VB6 never die. hehehe!

Choose a language. It doesn't have to be Java ... just a language that is comfortable to you and works with your hardware ... and then code, write lots of code. You are not going to write a POS system without first writing a calculator. God did not create the universe in one day.
