I think among the Philippine masses there is a (perhaps unconscious) tendency toward accommodating those in power or of wealth and of not questioning perceived authority. How many times have you seen some arrogant individual cut to the front of the queue at the supermarket or ATM with absolutely no opposition from those who wait patiently in line?

I think it is both right and sensible for the media to question the motives of government, however I think it is equally vital that rival politicians are exposed for trying to make political mileage during times of crisis when consensus is clearly in the nation's best interests.

I agree.
Our emotions is the primary reason why we say something about how we are hurt and affected for underneath it is love, Love to our Country.....Words are the vehicle we use to hopefully make things better, and to make things better by implementing our understanding about failure and its possible intervention to prevent failure not to happen again.... It is unwise to constantly pounding our government/leaders of complaint....Im pretty sure nobody wants to do things to intentionally hurt each one of us... One does things in accordance to their beliefs and values..... and by using words to destroy or scrutinize ones effort to fix a problem....that person is a problem in itself, it shows what kind of values we have.

to run a family is SIMILAR to run a government.....but not literally "THE SAME"....
this is in itself is another topic....
How then could we Filipinos make things Right. What was done Wrong?
What could have been done to make it right?....
Forget the Heros.... you need to dig deeper to understand the comparrisson.

I agree, and there is a due process to make this happen. Its Called the law of the Land. I am sure there are a good numbers of our Law makers who can implement it well, with a very slim margin of error.

Right, there is an appropriate due process that could have worked better than martial law. There are a good number of lawmakers who can implement that well and those were the ones who were active in the martial law joint sessions. PGMA must have been giggling watching those competent lawmakers making a fool out of themselves when she can just lift martial law anytime.

Cory-Ampatuan link: Poor research or polluted sources?

to: Isagani Yambot, Publisher
Philippine Daily Inquirer

Dear Sir,

After reading Belinda Olivares-Cunanan’s 10 December 2009 “Political Tidbits” column in the PDI, I was very alarmed to see that Mrs. Cunanan stated as a “fact” that Former President Corazon C. Aquino appointed Andal Ampatuan Sr. as OIC of Maganoy in 1986.

As an avid reader of the PDI, I am disappointed to see such an irresponsible statement printed, whether or not it is attributable to poor research or polluted sources.

What is perhaps more disturbing is that this malicious historical error has been refuted over and over by credible sources even from within your paper.

Furthermore, Fr. Eliseo “Jun” Mercado, OMI, has publicly corrected the outright lie that President Aquino appointed Andal Ampatuan Sr. as OIC.

The truth
is that Ampatuan Sr. was already OIC of Maganoy (now Shariff Aguak) and was appointed by the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos, when President Aquino came to power. In fact, President Aquino *removed* the Ampatuan patriarch and replaced him with a non-political member of the Ampatuan clan, Datu Bodhi Ampatuan, who served as Chief of Police in Maguindanao.
Fr. Mercado, who was then parish priest and NAMFREL Chairman of Maguindanao, personally told Ampatuan Sr. that the latter was being replaced by President Aquino.

Seeing how volatile the situation is now, the said statement is very disparaging of the memory of our beloved Tita Cory. Ethics dictate that such statements should be made with extreme caution, and should be founded on good, solid facts from unimpeachable sources.

In the interest of balanced views and fairness, I hope my letter finds its way into publication if only to correct the blatant falsity perpetuated by Mrs. Cunanan’s statement on the matter.

Yours truly,
Abigail dela Fuente-Valte

'Martial law lifting might free Ampatuans' - Yahoo! Philippines News

'Martial law lifting might free Ampatuans'
Philstar.com - Monday, December 14SendIM StoryPrint.MANILA, Philippines - The Ampatuans, the primary suspects in the brutal killing of 57 people in Maguindanao last November 23, might be released from detention after the ifting of martigal in the province, a presidential bet today claimed.

Felix Cantal, Philippine Green Republic party standard bearer, said removing military rule could lead to the release of people arrested during that time, such as the Ampatuans, their supporters and civilian volunteer organizations.

Under martial law, defendants in a murder case can never be given bail but without military rule, they can file for bail, said Cantal, a former member of the United Nations International Court of Justice.

He said the authorities should have placed the whole province of Maguidanao under a cordone sanitaire, to prevent people from entering and leaving the place.

“Then the people behind this unprecedented and gruesome murder will not be able to escape and the mastermind easily apprehended,” Cantal said.

Cantal also said that under martial rule, those charged with rebellion or murder must be charged before a military court.

He also expressed fear that the lawyers of the Ampatuans may file petitions questioning their arrest and continued detention, considering that martial law had already been lifted.

“Dapat kasi dinala nun sa military court dahil inaresto ito noong panahon ng martial law, pero naalis na ang martial law. Ibig sabihin ba nito ay maari na rin silang umuwi? What happens to the Ampatuans dahil wala nang martial law?” Cantal said.

President Arroyo lifted the declaration of martial law after meeting with her top security advisers, saying the government had achieved its main objectives in Maguindanao.

Now charged with multiple murder is Datu Unsay Mayor Andal Ampatuan, Jr. while his father, former Maguindanao governor Andal Ampatuan Sr., has been charged with rebellion. - By Dennis Carcamo (Philstar News Service, Philippine News for the Filipino Global Community)

indeed. ignoring the government's mistake of declaring martial law is not being a part of the solution. being silent or supporting always the government when what they've done is unconstitutional is being part of the problem.

November 23 Massacre Victims: 65? PDF Print E-mail
by Patricio P. Diaz/MindaNews
Monday, 14 December 2009 08:37

GENERAL SANTOS CITY (MindaNews/13 Dec) – A collation of media reports and the report of the President to Congress showed that 65 were massacred on the hillside of Masalay, a sitio of Barangay Salman in Ampatuan, Maguindanao last November 23. This is not just a statistical probability. All the 65 were identified with names.

President Arroyo’s report named 55 victims; the partial list posted in INQUIRER.net on November 25 had 47 names. Media reports have consistently mentioned 57 victims of whom 31 were media people.

The victims were in eight vehicles. Five -- the UNTV van and four Toyota Grandia vans -- comprised the Mangudadatu convoy. The three others -- one official car of Tacurong City, a red Toyota Vios, one Tamaraw FX, and one Pajero – happened to follow the convoy.

MindaNews (November 29) reported that the Toyota Vios had five passengers and the Tamaraw FX was driven by Anthony Ridao. It did not mention any number of people in the Pajero. A report said Ridao was alone.

The Arroyo report identified 12 Mangudadatu women relatives; two lady lawyers and the father of lawyer Cynthia Oquendo; 29 media people; two drivers; five government employees; and four civilians.

The 12 Mangudadatu women in the Arroyo report matched with the INQ.net report; so did the two lawyers and Mr. Oquendo. These 15 were in the Mangudadatu convoy.

The 29 media people named in the Arroyo report did not include four named in the INQ.net list. That brought the number of media victims named to 33. They were in the convoy.

The two drivers named in the Arroyo report were in the INQ.net list. However, four in the list were not in the Arroyo report. That made six the number of drivers. Inquirer reporter Aquiles Zonio, one of the three media men left behind, said in his report (November 24) there were five drivers in the convoy.

The four civilians named in the Arroyo report were not in the INQ.net list. One civilian named in the INQ.net list was not among the four named in the Arroyo report. That made five the number of victims indentified as civilians.

To sum up the collated numbers: 12 Mangudadatu relatives; 3 convoy members (two lawyers and Mr. Oquendo); 33 media people; 6 drivers; 5 government employees; and 5 civilians: Total: 64.

Human Rights Commissioner Lilia de Lima (Inquirer.net, December 3) said four families were claiming three bodies indicating one victim missing. MindaNews (December 3) said the Momay family of Tacurong City had reported to the CHR that Reynaldo “Bebot” Momay, photographer of Midland Review, was still missing. That raised the number of media victims to 34 and the total number of named victims to 65.

Incidentally, Zonio reported on November 24 that the Mangudadatu convoy consisted of 16 women (obviously counting Mr. Oquendo in this number), 37 media people, and five drivers. Since he and two others did not join in the last minute, there were only 34 media people and 55 in the convoy. Not part of the convoy were one driver, five employees and four civilians taking the Toyota Vios, Tamaraw FX and the Pajero.

The list of victims from the collated reports:

Mangudadatu relatives: Bai Genalin T. Magudadatu, Pinky Balaiman, Bai Eden Mangudadatu, Bai Farida Mangudadatu, Rowena Anne Mangudadatu, Mamotavia Magudadatu, Faridah Dabdula, Soraida Vernan (Bernan in INQ.net list), Raidah Sapalan Abdul, Rahima Puto Palawan, Lailan “Ella” Balayman, and Wahida Ali Kalim.

Two lawyers: Atty. Cynthia Oquendo-Ogano and Atty. Concepcion “Connie” Brizuela.

Atty. Oquendo’s father: Cataleno Oquendo.

Media people: (In GMA Report) Gina dela Cruz, Lea Dalmacio, Marites Cablitas, Marife Montaño, Alejandro “Bong” Reblando, McDelbert “Mac Mac” Areola, Ray Matisco, Bienvenido Jun Lagarta, Napoleon Salaysay, Eugene Depillano, Rossell Morales, Arturo Betia, Noel Decena, John Canibo, Junpee Gatchalian, Victor Nuñez, Andres Teodoro, Romeo Capela;

Joy Duhay. Ronnie Perante, Benjie Adolfo, Ian Santiago, Joel Parcon, Robello Bataluna, Linda Lipugan, Ernesto Maravilla, Fernando Razon, Hannibal Cachuela, Henry Araneta; (In INQ.net list, not in Report) Councilor Razul Daud, Jovy Lagarta, Boyet dela Cruz, Art Mascardo; (Reported missing by family to CHR) Reynaldo “Bebot” Momay.

Drivers: (In GMA Report) Abdila Ayada, Norton “Sidic” Edza; (In INQ.net list, not in Report) Unto, Eugene, Patrick Pamansag, Chito.

Government Employees: (All in GMA Report) Wilhelm Palabrico, Mercy Palabrico, Anthony Ridao, Eduardo “Nonie” Lechonsito, Daryll Vincent delos Reyes.

Civilians: (In GMA Report) Mariam Calimbol, Jephon C. Cadagdagon, Joellito Evardo, Cecile Lechonsito; (In INQ.net list) Patricia Palapay. (Patricio P. Diaz/MindaNews)
