f/3.5 doesn't do very nice vivid colored images and images don't look too sharp do they? Well, there is such thing as what we call the "sweet spot" or rather the sweet stop. f/8. Use this setting and it yield better pictures with your ordinary kit lens. I tried this out myself and noticed a more vivid color in my pictures now.
