While it is true that substrate nutrients can get depleted, it will not kill plants; they just slow their growth a bit or show some deficiencies here and there. Slow growth is simply unacceptable for show tanks and for seasoned aquascapers, thats why substrate augmentation/relacement is recommended. Mulm deposited on the gravel slowly becomes nutrients but plants take them up faster than they are replenished.

I have yet to see or read of an effective algaecide that does not contain copper. It is usually copper sulfate or some chelate of copper. We add copper sulfate to our swimming pools so that they dont turn slimy and green. hehehe.
Its not harmful to fish and plants but it is harmful to inverts. Some more so than others.

Bai, i have been successfull with my planted for years now. i only use river sand, enough light and co2 injection system. an eheim filter would be good move.

there's a lot UGF filter advocates at palhs ... but usually the forums based in the USA don't suggest using this.. but if it works for them. you might want to give it a shot.

or go DIY cannister filter. Google for some schematics.. I've seen some nice DIY cannister filter somewhere out in the net. just make sure you have the right GPH for your tank

The more the merrier! Piper owns a petshop in Foodland, Banilad where that Flyover's being built. You should stop by that place sometime, they'll probably have what your looking for.
