its weird I qualified for the free upgrade but my product number of my hp laptop is invalid and my vista is 64 bit and my upgrade is fixed to 32 bit

if your current OS is 64 bit, your upgrade should be 64bit too. When did you buy your HP laptop? The Windows 7 upgrade is only eligible for purchases after Jun26,2009.
