Ok ra man if you use IIS. It's indeed easy to set up, and it's recommended for users who want to set up their own personal web servers for the first time. Don't easily believe people who claim that IIS sucks; it can just be as secure as Apache as long you know how to properly configure it. The problem with IIS is that it has nearly everything enabled by default, and that many of the exploitable bugs are in those services that you never need. Once you get the hang of setting up IIS, you will eventually require more flexibility that Apache, lighttpd, and other web servers offer. At this point, you may want to explore setting up a Unix operating system. Free Unix systems include FreeBSD, OpenBSD, and NetBSD. Linux, although not a real Unix, will be a good choice for new users. If you're just experimenting, you need not register for a domain name. In fact, you don't even have to have an IP address (except for loopback) at all. You can just access your server via "localhost" or "127.0.0.1" [ simon.cpu ] |
