Ely Buendia looks forward to Eraserheads repeat concert when he recovers fully

Eraserheads main man Ely Buendia granted his first live interview, through phone patch, in Showbiz Central yesterday, September 21, after that fateful night in Bonifacio Global City where his original band had a reunion concert.

It can be recalled that Ely wasn't able to finish the concert last August 30 because he was rushed to the hospital for what later was diagnosed as a heart condition . Since his hospitalization, Ely's bandmates Raimund Marasigan, Buddy Zabala, and Marcus Adoro have given their personal opinions and accounts in interviews about the unfinished concert.

Yesterday in Showbiz Central, Ely finally put controversial issues to rest by answering host Pia Guanio's questions.

First, of course, was about his health. Is Ely doing okay now?

"I am still resting, but okay naman. Kailangan lang na bantayan ang tulog at kain," Ely said in a clear voice.

Before the concert, people were clamoring for it to happen. In spite of his mother's passing away and his health problems, Ely made the concert a reality. What made him do it?

"Well, unang-una, e, yung sa mom ko," Ely said. "Yeah, of course, we did have the option not to continue. Pero, well, that show was actually for my mom. She was one of the reasons why I agreed to do it kasi the number one fan of the Eraserheads is my mom. She had been a fan of the band from the start to the finish. Ayoko pa pahintayin ang number one fan na si Mama. Baka magalit din sa akin yun ‘pag hindi itinuloy ang concert, e."

What did Ely feel when he climbed the stage to greet the many fans—twenty to thirty thousand people—who wanted to see the Eraserheads perform once again?

"Mahirap i-explain, e," Ely admitted. "Pero yung adrenaline rush, sobra! I mean, nakaupo nga ako doon, e, hindi ko na ma-contain ang excitement. Parang nilakasan ko na lang ang loob ko na huwag magka-nervous breakdown on stage dahil kailangan kong kumanta. Pero it was overwhelming talaga—the crowd, the energy, and the love that came from that audience."

As a rock icon, did he really still feel nervous during the concert?

"Oo naman!" he admitted. "Hindi naman mawawala ‘yon, e."

Pia asked Ely about people at the concert who were screaming "Group hug!" Yet the band members did not do it. Did they hear the chant?

"Naintindihan ko," said Ely. "Pero alam ko naman na ginu-good time lang nila kami. I mean, I don't think na ine-expect nila kami na mag-group hug nga ang grupo."

On the night itself, what happened during the intermission? Can Ely recount what happened backstage in his point of view?

“Right after the last song at the first set, e, naramdaman ko parang hindi ako makahinga,” Ely related. “So, there was an ambulance there and may medical crew. Sila agad tinawag ko at humingi ako ng oxygen. When I got to my dressing room, I felt pain in my chest and nag-collapse na ako.”

Now, the answer to this next question should come from Ely himself. Would the Eraserheads ever host a repeat concert?

“Yeah, of course,” Ely answered. “That’s the number one thing in my mind. Siyempre, I’m not going to sign on to anything yet until I’m pretty sure na kaya ko gawin yun ulit. It’s a wait-and-see thing muna at this point.”

That said, how’s the band coming along now? Are the four of them in much better terms?

“Yung tatlo binisita ako sa ospital and we’ve been always been good friends,” said Ely.

Message to fans?

“I hope you enjoyed the show!” laughed Ely, probably thinking about the ending that he did not expect. “Thank you very much to all of you for supporting us until now and doon sa mga hindi nakanood at sa mga na-late, siguro may next time pa, who knows?”

Ely admitted that he was also “bitin” and was looking forward to the next Eraserheads concert.

All Eraserheads, All The Time

So it's been over a month since that fabled Eraserheads reunion went from rumor status to a real live event. And yet people are still talking about it like it was only yesterday that the crowds were milling about Fort Bonifacio, gawking at the giant screen with the digital countdown. The blogs are still a-buzz, and it's still the main topic of conversation on the Eraserheads mailing list. The August 30 concert even spun off a few spoofs on television via a "Bubble Gang" skit and a hilarious episode of Quark Henares' show "Rakista" on Channel 5 guest starring Raymund "Drums not Drama" himself. When will this madness end?

If Sony BMG has its way - not anytime soon. Sticking by that old dictum "Strike while the iron is Hot" (a phrase not invented by Orange and Lemons by the way) the label that co-produced the Reunion Concert is readying a steady stream of product to keep the eHeads faithful thoroughly entertained (and spending their hard earned dough) all the way through Christmas 2008 and into the first quarter of 2009 - or at least until the second reunion concert.Can't blame them. It's an extremely rare situation, but as the Reunion Concert showed, anything associated with this well-loved but defunct band will practically sell itself with very little marketing push needed. Or as that imaginary saying goes, "Milk while the udder is full."

For one, there's never been a great time to be an eHeads collector. Cashing in on the Reunion frenzy, Sony BMG went and reissued the entire Eraserheads catalog, including previous rarities such as Sticker Happy, Natin 99, and their last studio album Carbon Steroxide. Utterly amazing for a band long disbanded, the Eraserheads have become the hottest selling recording artists, with the albums in the back catalog now the top selling CDs in the sales charts.

And then there's all the new material coming out. New Material

Judging from what we've picked up from various sources, here's what's coming down the pike from Sony BMG, all cranked out of that one glorious evening. Availability: Real Soon Now.

-A live official "Reunion Concert" album.
-A live concert DVD.
-A concert film - to be shown in select theaters prior to the DVD release.
-A 10-CD Box Set with everything the Eraserheads ever recorded and more.

Ok, let's see which of these items actually make it to market - though it's safe to say all of them will.

The album details were pretty much described already by long time eHeads cohort Rommel "Sancho" Sanchez, who produced the album along with legendary engineer Angee Rozul. The album graphic design will be created by Cynthia Bauzon-Arre (who as old timers will recall, did the illustrations for the Fruitcake book back in '96).

subject [eraserheads] reunion live album

"Hey, peeps.
I just got home from Tracks where Angee Rozul and I just finished work on the live reunion album. I'm attached to the project as record producer.

This will be the first album since Circus that's not produced by Robin Rivera, though this is not the first time for me to produce an Eraserheads rack. I produced their version of Manila for the Hotdog tribute album,
though I wasn't properly credited on the inlay.

Anyway, the album sounds great. Angee and I also made sure that the "crowd moments" were properly highlighted, specially yung mga sigaw ng "group hug!" and yung mga sing-along parts.

I'll listen to the whole album again tomorrow (pagod na tenga ko) and see if there are last-minute tweaks. I'll also give copies to the boys so they can listen and make objections (hopefully none, heheh) before the disc goes to the duplicators.

If all goes well, the CD will be in stores soon. The album cover and inlay is being designed by Cynthia Bauzon-Arre. I'm excited to see the final roduct.

We're guessing that the album mix will be the basis for the DVD soundtrack as well (hopefully re-mixed in Dolby 5.1).

This isn't even counting that Eraserheads-themed rom-com trilogy "UltraElectroMagnetic Love" that was announced by Regal Films some time back. Maybe that film will see the light of day in time by Christmas.

Bring them on. As the saying would go - if it was an actual saying- "Eat while the buffet is open".
