Default Nokia Unveils WiMax-Enabled N810 Internet Tablet

Nokia's Internet Tablet line has always been something of an odd duck. The first iteration was a touchscreen-only job whose operating system was about as user-friendly as the Linux nerds who used it. But with every update this family of open-source palmtops has eked closer to the mainstream, first sprouting a camera, then a keyboard, and now, with the N810 refresh announced a few minutes ago, WiMax and a sexy darkened paintjob. It's called, not surprisingly, the Nokia N810 Internet Tablet: WiMax Edition. Just rolls off the tongue. It's due out this summer at a price TBD.

Before you ask, no, it still isn't a phone. But if WiMax gets as ubiquitous as its boosters would like us to believe, Nokia's tablets won't need cellular capabilities. Both Gizmo and Skype have applications made especially for the Internet Tablets, and, with always-accessible wireless broadband, VoIP could be a pretty decent option. Of course, unless you live in a city with WiMax, like Baltimore, Washington DC or Chicago (and Boston soon!), you're out of luck for the near future. Hope you like the paintjob!
