Dont: If you don't know how to speak cebuano, dont talk in tagalog at a very high pitch/tone that even a man sleeping 500 meters away could hear you. You dont come as socialite if you talk in tagalog, obnoxious at best. Every now and then, try to insert a word or two of cebuano, cebuanos will be glad to hear you trying hard to talk in the native tongue.

Perhaps we (as Cebuanos) should further explain why we are kinda annoyed at the Tagalogs. If I may, I would like to contribute couple of reasons:
1. When Cebuanos go to Manila, of course, we're expected to speak in Tagalog no matter how bad it is, however, when the Tagalogs come and stay in Cebu, they still expect us Cebuanos to speak in Tagalog. I make it a habit to speak in Cebuano or English whenever I meet Manilans who have stayed in Cebu for a long time, yet still speak to us in Tagalog. 2. The people from Manila, most of the time, display air of superiority as if Cebuanos are never exposed and stupid. Cebuanos are very friendly and nice, accommodating, tolerant and usually humble (which people take as being naive), but please don't take this as inferior. |
