It's a white-sand island located at the small, peaceful town of Matalom, Leyte. Good for picnics and overnight camping. Easily accessible, just 10mins from the port of Hilongos, Leyte. To view pictures of the island and the town itself, click the following links: http://joylao.myphotoalbum.com/view_...FriendsBeaches http://joylao.myphotoalbum.com/view_...omLeyte&page=1 I'll be glad to answer your inquiries if anyone is interested to visit there... just send me a PM or reply here Â* |

Canigao: A Portrait of an Island Paradise Lost
by: Arthur Q. Villordon -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- It juts out of the water, coconut-green on white sand. Canigao lies off the southwestern coast of Leyte, near Matalom on the Leyte-Southern Leyte border. To passengers on passing interisland vessels, the islet is no different from the many uninhabited islets in the Philippines: serene and unspoiled. However, there's more than meets the eye in Canigao. "They kept coming back for the corals and took some of the islet's white sand too," Nong Berto, a fisherman from Matalom declares. He is deeply tanned and his hair is a pale yellow from all the fishing he has done in the area. He takes his family each weekend to Canigao for picnics and spearhunting. The seabed around Canigao used to teem with corals and fish and now there is practically nothing but sand and the fish seem to be elsewhere. "We fish further to the south now, but the dynamite fishers aren't making things easier for us." He lets the banca drift with the current and calls out to the lighthouse keeper. It is early afternoon and nobody answers back. The lighthouse on Canigao helps ships navigate the channel during night; Nong Berto and other fishermen use the beacon when coming in late from fishing trips. The last typhoon didn't help any. It seems that both nature and man have been unkind on Canigao. The mangrove stand near the islet's western shore have been washed away and the once pristine beach is now ragged; unslightly coconut roots -- exposed by wind, wave, and tide -- dominate the shoreline. Fewer people come to Canigao on weekends now and the coral collectors have sought other areas. Nong Berto detects a squall developing and cranks up the banca's motor. He uses a bamboo pole to manipulate the rudder; the boat picks up speed and heads for the village. Canigao recedes in the distance, and the gathering clouds move rapidly from the south. Nong Berto looks looks out into the sea and says: "this squall will pass, it always does, and we will go out and fish and be back before the sunrise." |

20 - 30 mins up north gikan sa matalom by multi-cab then 10 - 20 mins pud padulong sa isla by bangka. |
