^ not the questions itself... rather how a person answers a specific question defies his well-being

i'm not an HR manager or the like but i do get chances of interviewing applicants.i know i have thrown questions that maybe considered as "illegal" for other standards but in my case these so called "illegal" questions of theirs are needed to screen our applicants fit for our requirements. case to case.i don't know with the corporate world

the questions are not appropriate but can't be considered "illegal" even if it is, there is always another way of getting the same answers...

As far as I can remember, these are the common examples on a local adds of a newspaper in Cebu:

2X2 picture
must be 22-25 years old
willing to work overtime w/out pay for 3 months (kay trainee lagi...)
W/ pleasing Personality...(mora mag beauty contest sad dah!!)
Must be single

Now these are perfect examples of "Discrimination"

...............Unless your applying for Hooters & Scores Strip Club

the "do you smoke or drink alcohol?", "what is your native language?" , "where were you born?" question is actually standard question during all my interview here in Japan.

first do you smoke or use alcohol? , in japan there is a thing called "nomikai" or drinking session where members of the group would go out together and drink. Some companies does not have any experience yet with handling foreign workers so they have to asked if you are ok with the idea of nomikai. Most of the time this question would come out after all the technical and formal questions.

what is your native language? - not all japanese kniows where Philippines is and what language is spoken in the archipelago. So we need to explain to them what language we can speak and dialect. It's actually an advantage at one point when they know that you are a multi-lingual cause it shows how easy it is for you to adapt to languages and that impresses them.

the where were you born and how old are you question is already in the resume so they don't ask it out loud just out of curiousity

I believe sa US lang na siya ILLEGAL but not in the PHILIPPINES . ANything can happen here hehehe .

BTW .... to those who said nothing is wrong when asking about PERSONAL QUESTIONS , it is indeed illegal specially in the US for the sole reason of the purpose of your presence there . You are not there to make friends but to become an asset to the company . Stick to the topic and issues why you are there thru reviewing the concern of his or her capabilities of what he or she can do to the company and not what the company can do to them .

There is an old saying: 'For want of a nail, the horseshoe was lost. For want of a horseshoe, the steed was lost. For want of a steed, the message was not delivered. For want of message, the war was lost.

here's the kicker though, if you won't answer those questions they will put your application under the stack.

hiring and training is expensive, they won't risk that expense to an applicant they relatively know little about regardless if the questions are discriminatory or not.
