CEBU CITY -- Global financial services firm JP Morgan Chase & Co. is expanding its operations in the Philippines by putting up a call center in Cebu. Senior executives of the New York Stock Exchange-listed company flew in recently to monitor retrofitting work on a leased space at the eBloc Tower in Asiatown IT Park.
Rainerio "Bong" Borja, president of Aegis PeopleSupport, said JP Morgan Chase would initially hire about 2,000 people. Mr. Borja met with the executives of JP Morgan since the financial services company is a client of Aegis PeopleSupport. The company is reportedly looking for additional space that will double its capacity in Cebu. "They were very happy with what they saw and they are looking for another site. That means they will hire another 2,000 people," Mr. Borja said during the 15th anniversary celebration of the Cebu Investment Promotions Center. JP Morgan’s Cebu facility will house the Chase Card Services operations. Chase Card is a general-purpose credit card. There are about 168 million cards in circulation and more than $190 billion in managed loans, the company’s Web site showed. Mr. Borja said JP Morgan’s expansion shows that Cebu has continued to attract investments. PeopleSupport, one of the first business process outsourcing (BPO) companies to expand to Cebu, started with only 50 seats in 2003. Mr. Borja said the firm now has about 3,000 employees here. "We only had 50 seats in 2003, when there was nothing (in Asiatown) but two low-rise buildings. Now, there are a lot of high-rise buildings (in the cyberpark). It’s a 24-hour city," he added. Cebu now hosts a total of 65 BPO companies that employ an estimated 50,000 people. For the second consecutive year, Cebu was named the top emerging BPO destination in the world by Tholons magazine |
