Robert Kirkman (The Walking Dead, Invincible, Astounding Wolfman) just recently gave a talk about saving the comic book industry. It's a very insightful talk and inspires to really focus on creator-owned work. You can hear it here:

Kirkman makes a very solid point. I think what he's saying is that creator shouldn't stop after getting into Marvel/DC, and should cough up creator owned comics instead of writing the same character(s) into shitville, or making new series of old obscure characters just to keep the creators signed with the companies. Also thinking that Marvel/DC will get more sales if they get new people to write new stories for new readers, which are mainly younger people. I don't think it would hurt if they'll get new creators so that the old timers can do what they want to do, and that gives room for new talent and aspiring creators know that they have a chance when the time comes.

All I'm saying is, the good thing about Kirkman's idea is that the line will not stop at Marvel/DC, and more people will come to stand in line to take a shot to write or draw for the Big 2. Either if it's for the new kids or the long time fanmen. We don't want another "return" of Rob Liefeld, and sure Howard Chaykin is "legendary", but his stuff in Punisher: War Journal is, let's just say other artists can do better than that. Maybe a new guy, who knows? What matters is, creators get the change to work with the characters they loved reading, and eventually they get to do what they really want to do as creators.

Totally agree. If you go to work for Marvel or DC, you WILL get paid big money... but when you're hot, you're hot... but after a while... when you're not, you're not. and unless you're actually saving money while you're still at Marvel, you're screwed. Creator-owned stuff insures that you will have money of your own. Mike Mignola owns Hellboy, I'm pretty sure he can still have a steady income thru Hellboy when he's 65 and can't even draw anymore. Chris Claremont doesn't own shit. I wonder how he's doing.

Claremont's writing shitty books these days, everyone knows that. Also, Batman on acid is trippy. Goddamn Morrison is on drugs.

Hey monmon, usually these days, it's just me and john_amor who meets for drink and draw sessions. And suede too, sometimes. It's better if you can post some of your stuff, or give us a link of your stuff. Just keep on visiting this thread, maybe we'll decide to meet soon and you can join, bro.

Peace, vemp.

I just watched both hellboy 2 and wanted.

wanted - very very different from the comics... I like the comics better.

hellboy 2 - very predictable ending.

@all

just wanna ask what type of paper are all of you pips draw on? several here recently mentioned about an 11x17 sized paper/board. me, i draw (when i was still doing it long ago..hehehe) on 11x17 2-ply bristol board which i used to buy at national bookstore and it was uncut, meaning i have to cut it up to 11x17 sizes which is annoying to do....(back to lurking mode...hehhehe)

@zerk
yeah, wanted the comic book is way, way better than the movie. but i enjoyed watching angelina jolie though.

@mangtas
most of the guys here use 11x17. me on the other hand, use ordinary short bond paper. but i have a couple of pre-cut 11x17 i bought from a bookstore near UST in manila. i think the sales lady the mentioned that some comic book artist from cubao also buy pre-cut boards from them.

i cant seem to find pre-cut boards in cebu though, but there is this visayan school supply near USJR that doesnt sell pre-cut boards because of low or non-existent demand. maybe we should go there in turn, they might soon supply the demand.

@suede

i was disappointed ... as i was expecting nudity and seks.. like the comics.. damn.. wala man nihubo si angelina. hahahahaa

@mangtas

think of it as exercise for drawing long lines. using a blade with a t-square is about the same as drawing a line with a pencil. ..

pero it really annoys you.. you can draw on any size paper and stitch/photoshop your drawings to 11x17

@zerk and suede

mao...hehehe...i did called StarPaper Corp. in mandaue once and they offer to cut up 11x17's for about Php500.00 of 100 sheets (which could roughly produce about 200+ so pcs.) of 1st grade U.S. Cartolina which they said was on par with a 2-ply bristol board. that would be cool i guess.

so that's about 5 per 11x17 board? not bad. maybe we should try that one.
