back in elementary, I used to trace drawings from comics.. i think they were john byrne's and george perez's stuff... I'd even recommend tracing just for practice.. tat way, you can experience (partially) how a certain artist works.
another trend that's kinda getting old also is tracing a celebs for certain comic characters. murag gi luta ra man sab gihapon nila. hhehehee but I certainly don't advocate tracing ala greg land or rob liefield .. in short, don't try to do it publcly.. bad taste.. |

Greg Land is not a comic book artist. Period.
Keeping it Relevant Department: When I do research on a character's appearance (facial intricacies, body type, costume, mannerisms, etc) I try my best not to just look at one comic, because that increases the risk of me inadvertently channeling the style of whoever was drawing that particular issue. My own style doesn't have a strong enough "personality" to not be visibly influenced by outside sources just yet. Seeing several artists do the characters allows me to have a broad view of the character, so I don't have narrow-view pads around my eyes like a horse dragging a cart. I'm sorry... that's the best analogy I can come up with. When I'm researching on other stuff (background elements, vehicles, cloth, etc.) I use Google Images. The internet is my friend. Recommended Reads: I've been enjoying the works of two upcoming writers lately. Matt Fraction (Eagle Award winner for fave newcomer and Eisner nominee for best single issue) has just started what I'm sure will be a great first arc on Invincible Iron Man. Plus he's taking over Uncanny X-men with Ed Brubaker, his sparring partner when he was working on Iron Fist, which I'm sure all comic heads agree was awesome. Jason Aaron is my second fave writer right now. He just concluded an arc in Wolverine that involved him simply chasing Mystique. It was quite literally Wolverine doing what he did best. And the blood factor was fantastic. Jason Aaron also does Ghost Rider. |

@guys: I think our interests are diverging and I think it's best if I leave the group to focus on what it does best. I still appreciate comic book art but I no longer understand your lingo so to speak and I'm afraid my toy fetish is not of interest to this group. So, I wish you guys luck especially to ja who I wish to see draw his first Marvel comics one of these days and of course to vemp and suede who have shown improvement over the past two years. I'll lurk from time to time but I don't think I can contribute anything to this group anymore.
Thanks guys... Keep it up! |

It always hurts to see one of the founders of a group leave. But people change, their interests change, and change is the only constant thing in the world (well, along with the speed of light, gravity, and other 'k' constants). So I wish cmontoya all the luck in his new endeavor and thank him for starting this group!
Also, if anyone has difficulty acquiring the comics/things me and johnny boy are talking about, don't hesitate to ask. We (I know I can) could help you show the direction on how to get the said comics. Either physically or digitally. Also, if you have spare Php 140.00, try getting "Trese" from National Bookstore, it's a comicbook by local Filipino artists (Budjette Tan and Kajo Baldisimo). It's like multo-multohan meets pulis-pulisan, it's pretty good and a bit cheesy in the sides, but still a good read. |

@all: I believe I owe everyone a more thorough explanation (I think I hurt ja's feelings).
1. We started this group with no vision of grandeur, i.e., we didn't plan to copy SuKoL mo or Popcorn. We were just a group with a shared passion - comic books, the art inside them, and anything related to them -- movies, games -- and more. 2. Most of you have seen how 'passionate' I was but I think there was a time (dunno when exactly) that I lost said emotion. And that time happened even before I got hooked with toys and photography. A few of you have seen my empty sketchbook. 3. And I'm sure most of you have read my posts not related to sequential art whatsover and I realized that I was misbehaving according to the rules of this forum. If this thread wants to attract other serious sequential artists who may be lurking, then this thread has to talk about sequential art and nothing but. 4. Worst of all, I'm fickle minded when it comes to extra curricular activities (and by that I don't mean extramarital). Who knows I might get bitten by the drawing bug again. For now, I'm swollen with other things. And dear gods in whatever heavens you believe, I'm only 'leaving the group' not friends. I can still go to our meetings but instead of a sketchbook, I'll be bringing a toy and a camera. Nuff said... @vemp: I did see that graphic novel. Is the cover art the same one inside? |
