At the risk of sounding like a cliche, I will iterate that "That's the spirit." More than usually, the biggest thing that tends to stop us aspiring artists from actually being able to get on our feet and make things happen is the fear of rejection. I won't lie. It's a real fear. One definitely worth bearing in mind. But at the the end of the day, that's all it is... a fear. Something you're afraid of, but nothing you can't overcome.
It's important to be able to try at least. Years from now, IF we fail at this thing we're trying to do, IF we never become what we're trying to become, and IF we never achieve what we are individually hoping to achieve, we can still say that at least we tried. And we tried hard. That said, www.johnamor.wordpress.com has been updated. |

Hey, good job suede. That's a start. But, (there's always a but) don't leave it at that. Some people are very good at starting things, yet they fail to deliver and follow-up, leaving it stale and in the end dead. Another idea dead due to lack of action.
I can honestly say that I'm one of those people who procrastinate and tend to jump from one thing to another. I have short attention span. I get bored easily. That also means I lose focus on what I do. But I am trying to change all that. Because if you don't do anything, and just wait for something to happen, most likely is that thing will not happen and you'll end up wishing you've done something, everything, to achieve it. P.S. Omega the Unknown is very underrated. People should start reading this beautiful limited series. |

Speaking of attention spans! Since my Marvel status is pretty much up in the air right now and I'm waiting for projects that may (or may not) come, I've decided to jump back into more sequential work. They have me on a short list in their talent pool (as per what CB told me via email), but he also encouraged me to keep updating my portfolio, because that is NEVER a bad idea.
Wow, I distracted myself there. Anyway... speaking of attention spans! I'm jumping back into a set of sequentials that I started a few weeks ago but stopped because I had to celebrate holy week, go out of town, harass a female officemate, and chew my fingers off as I waited for the Marvel talent search results. Lights are flashing green right now. Page one of six is just about done as of tonight, and I'm going forth full steam. Yes yes... eeexcelent... |

@john_amor: Hay salamat. At least I know you're still the JA I know. Hadn't you mentioned "harass a female officemate", I'd really confirm
my suspicions that you're an alien. @vemp: Sigh <raises hands, head bowed>. Guilty... The only time I'm inspired to draw is when I'm with you guys. Hmm, now I'm sounding like a homo, er, alien too. |

It's actually a little interesting (and a little funny) that when we use the word influence in an art discussion, the automatic assumption is that we are talking about influence in terms of style. It is assumed that we are referring to an echo of a popular artist's style in our own styles. That's all fair and definitely a valid point. But also worth pointing out, and perhaps even more important, is artists' influences on each other not just regarding style, but in personal terms as well. Like when our drawing habits become infectious or when our work ethic is adopted by a large group.
I value this group because it reminds me that striving for a goal doesn't need to be a solitary endeavor; and more often than not, it's very energizing to know that the love for the medium is shared. ------- With all that said, I'd like to point out that I will be in my usual spot in EastWest this coming Sunday to draw to my heart's content. |

The thing with group sessions is there's a feeling of belongingness, and the aura that each person radiates is absorbed by the participants in the group, hence increasing and heightening each one's creativity. Either through drawing, writing, or other mediums.
Another advantage are the opinions and feedback by other people. Drawing by yourself, the only way you can check if you did the right thing is by comparing your artwork with a reference. May it be the original art you based it from, or a picture. While as in a group setting, you get instant feedback from different sources with different views on your work. Some might like it, some might not, but each of them gives you an idea on what went right and what went wrong. Don't get me wrong, I love the company of other artists, but the concentration level is a lot different if you are alone. Or you have your own private space where you can gather your thoughts, concentrate, and execute your ideas. Still, I'm for group sessions, and I'm usually at EastWest with Johnny drawing something while sipping cold beer. |

I actually agree that the concentration level is much higher when you're drawing alone, which is why I do most of my real work (per se) at home alone. What I'm kind of trying to draw attention to is not really what we bring to the meeting as individuals, but rather what we take home as members of a collective. For me, the idea of being an artist and making comics is only half the fun... the other half comes from being able to mingle, shoot the shit, criticize each other's work (constructively of course), and share ideas.
