@Egoist, we'll be glad to have you. One of the mission/goal is 'expansion' (of the mind or of one's understanding) hehe. One way that can be achieved is to expand the genre of books that we read (that's also one of the reasons for my joining). I hope maybe we can include your taste in books for our selection. We'll try to have as many genre for our selection as possible, though of course mataud tauran pa tingali una ma taymingan nga ang atong forte or hilig ang pili-on nato for that particular month.

We may not have the same types of books but we do all have one thing in common: we like to read; for reasons that may differ -- discipline, speed-reading, etc. So let us unite! and not let our differences with regards to the types of books we read be a hindrance to this, hopefully.

@Velvett: Pwerteng late-a gyud! Haha. Bantog ra kalma ra kaayo pag abot kay wa diay kalibutan. Lol. Bitaw oi, okay ra.

@Galadriel: Welcome aboard! [br]Posted on: December 13, 2007, 03:21:45 PM_________________________________________________

we hope that the club will help us broaden our reading tastes... and nindut tong idea ni mam velvette ganiha na hopefully kung daghan2x na ta we can have different cells under one club; so for example one cell may want to focus more on sci fi books, another cell on classics, another on non-fiction, another on fantasy, etc., and members can "cross" to other cells as their reading preference/ appetite changes...

yup2x![br]Posted on: December 14, 2007, 01:18:43 AM_________________________________________________G uys, one of the things we talked about ganiha is book selection. Let's come up na lang with a list of suggested titles. As a guide, we thought it interesting to consider the following:

- Books that will be made into a movie
- Best seller lists/ book reviews
- Personal suggestions

Each of us can suggest a couple (or more) titles for the list, and then during the meeting next week let's narrow it down, and finally let's vote on the book we will read for January's gathering.

Ako suggestion kay:

1. I am Legend by Richard Matheson (In the movie version it will be starred by Will Smith);
2. Atonement by Ian McEwan (Will be starred by Kierra Knightley);
3. Prince Caspian by C. S. Lewis (The next installment in the Chronicles of Narnia);
4.
5.
6.
7.
8.
9.
10.

I dunno unsa ang mga best sellers karon sa National. I dunno if Powerbooks also have their list of best sellers. We can consider that, and we can also look into book reviews. Pwede pud kanang mga nakadaug og mga lit awards like the Nobel prize, or Palanca...

It would be nice if we can read the book before the movie opens in the theaters, but we can also watch them in DVD na lang hehe.

hi people, im reading this "Reading Group Handbook" lent to me by Josephdc (thanks, bro) and it's packed with ideas on starting a reading club.

regarding the book selection process, mao ni atong i consider in coming up with a diverse selection:
1. form - novel, novella, short story, prose, poetry, essay, plays and films
2. genre - historical fiction/nonfiction, feminist fiction/nonfiction, science fiction, classics, children's book, etc.
3. author - local author, foreign author (japanese, mexican, etc)
4. others - award-winning, adapted into a movie or play, mirrors current social condition, etc.

I suggest we post here our book suggestions, then when we meet next week we'll decide on what should be included in our dynamic 10-month syllabus (wow, futuristic!). we'll also know what will be the book for the January dicusssion.

dili man ta familiar with all titles so i suggest we give a little description (form, genre, about the author, others)

@josephdc perhaps you can give more info on your suggested readings bro..with this we'll see if our syllabus is diverse enough

@gareb, galenostiel, galadriel...give suggestions for the selection please...we are aiming for a very diverse selection. books by filipino authors, know of any?

i have a thin book here, entitled Fast Food Fiction (edited by Noelle de Jesus). it's a collection of very short stories, sometimes called 'flash fiction' which contain 1000 words or less each. you can actually finish reading one whole story in less than 3 minutes.

it's one of my personal favorites. and it's something i want to recommend to the reading list.
