Default How really safe is Mac OS X

Macs are not the virus-free playground they once were, says Apple

Most computer users take buying or otherwise obtaining antivirus software protection for granted as part of normal computer maintenance. However, users of Apple’s Macs, while being greatly in the minority compared to PCs for years have most gone with no virus protection.

para nako wala kaayo nag-interes ang mga crackers sa Mac kay mas dako og apektado kung PC kay mas daghan nigamit
or
nag-lisod ang mga crackers sa pag-sulod sa mga Mac (5% chance ra nga tinood ni para nako)
or

I have to agree with the bigger impact if malware coders attack windows users. That's the big reason. All computers are vulnerable to attacks... statistically... gamay ra ang mac users.

a lot of facts was not in that link. the way it was compromised was safari was directed to a site that charlie miller prepared that had the exploit ready he did not say how long did he worked to created that said exploit.

as for windows, apparently the Vista machine readily succumbed to a browser attack after Flash was installed (that's not included by default?? I guess it was a "totally clean" machine, not a real-world new machine that you would get from an OEM.)

it has since been updated, so case closed.

im testing your google search skills to find it and then apply a little logic.

MAC oSX have fewer viruses and has a higher level of security. The result extremely low risk of getting a virus.

yes thats what i mean the design of the OS ang basehan..unfortunately running as root is comon sa windows the supposed most secured and popular desktop OS automatically makes the first named user of the system is Administrator "with the power to do anything you want sa computer..oooopps not in linux and mac...bisag maghimo ka og non-admin account sa windows still makabutang baya gihapon ka og mga dll or system files...ngano kaha?

pero sa tinuod lang nothing is immune to human gullibility and stupidity, thats the reason why OS gone bad..."naghimo sila og pinaka popular, secure and blahblahblah OS and i will make it unsecure in 3sec!....

i read in insidetech that mac's "security" is only "secure" as what vyncynt says. Dili sikat.

When Mac OS was made to hold up against security attacks it was broken in under 15 mins. While Linux and Windows stood for a whole day. so the facade of "security" is only skin deep.

You can search this in an article on insidetech about a security expo a few months ago.

imo macs are for just for the everyday person who wants to use word processors and watch movies and pictures, its absolute foolproof and requires almost zero to no maintenance. really because my gf has a mac and ive got a vista laptop, she can treat her os like dirt plugging in any usb from anyone and leaving it on the internet and going to quite dangerous sites thanks to me, lol.

i honestly am afraid of using usb's of other people since i dont have much of a back up and ive got alot of important data.

macs are pretty secure imo when it comes to viruses and low maintenance

This is because Apple believe that Mac computers are secured beause of the concept Security through Obscurity. Every computer system is not secured at all times, it may also contain security flaws or vulnerabilities. As remembered, a Mac hacker distributed a virus called Leap-A/Oompa-A through the iChat application last 2006.
