Secondly: System instability such as random restarting or system hang is mainly caused by faulty capacitors on the mainboard. It is a fact that electrolytic capacitors simply DRY UP (or lose the bulk of its capacitance) with time. And since the majority of mainboards are designed with low cost of production in mind, most capacitors installed don't really last that long and you are indeed fortunate if your mainboard is still alive after 3-5 years!

In fact, I have repaired a number of motherboards that have been in use for only 1 year. Unfortunately, you just cannot tell by simply looking at the capacitors if they are bad or still good. Dunay burot nga OK pa ang ESR Reading, duna pod dili burot nga tass na kaayo and ESR Reading. The key actually is to be able to test the ESR of capacitors without ever detaching them from the board. Fortunately, I have that kind of tester and so we are doing it the scientific/professional way.

Here's some hard facts about electrolytic capacitors:

However, other board components such as the chipset and all other microcontroller chips do last a very long time if handled with care (usually 10+ years).

Lastly, yes I'm reselling reconditioned motherboards and hard disks with warranty.
Found something to validate this story.
